The problem here is that the front living room wraps into the stairway. I don't know if I like the idea of two dark walls next to each other here, what do you think?

i'd keep things light, and accent the wall on the left, which is likely where you'll have the couch and some art, and something more focal and draws the eye away from the fact you're welcomed by stairs, which aren't necessarily the most inviting.
